An Artist, A Space, A Search

Mid-2014, artist and director Yo-Yo Lin and I teamed up to make Ricerca (Ree-Cher-ka), her animation thesis project. Unlike other students, Yo-Yo wanted something far beyond the normal animated film: an immersive cinematic installation experience in a customized gallery space (and eventually in Virtual Reality).

Search  //  Ricerca

In Ricerca (Italian for 'search'), we follow the life of a man traveling through different memories and worlds to find something he has lost, or what was never his to begin with in the first place. Technologically demanding, this project included five free-hanging projection screens in a gallery space with custom-designed surround sound, effectively creating a space for people to be immersed and actively participating in their own individual experiences of searching through time.

VR and Beyond

The initial installation for Ricerca completed in May 2015, and it would be nearly a year later when we debuted the VR version of the piece with the help of The Family, Valve, Unity, and Two Big Ears. In summer 2016 Ricerca debuted with HTC's Viveport platform as a worldwide launch title. To see how we made it and more, check it out HERE.
